Our Team
di Lusso entered an exciting new chapter in 2025 when Alexander and Claire, alongside Gareth and Carmel, proudly took ownership of the estate. With a shared passion for wine, hospitality and the beauty of the Mudgee region, the team is dedicated to continuing the di Lusso legacy while bringing fresh energy and new ideas to the estate.
Guests are invited to experience everything di Lusso has to offer — from wine tastings of our classic Italian varietals to relaxed afternoons enjoying wood-fired pizza and Italian-inspired accompaniments. Beyond the cellar door, the estate is a place to explore and unwind, with the picturesque olive grove, fig orchard and beautiful grounds providing the perfect setting to slow down and savour the moment.
Whether you’re visiting for wine, food or simply the atmosphere, Alexander, Claire, Gareth and Carmel look forward to welcoming you and sharing what they have in store for the future of di Lusso.
Our Wine Philosophy
For di Lusso winemaker Alexander, the journey into wine began unexpectedly. Before entering the wine world, Alexander spent years travelling across Europe working in dairies as a cheesemaker, learning the craft of creating something truly by hand. When plans to return to Tasmania and establish a cheesery were disrupted during the pandemic, a chance friendship with respected winemaker Jim Chatto opened a new path.
What began as volunteering in vineyards and wineries during lockdown quickly turned into a passion. In 2021 Alexander produced his first wine — jumping straight in with ten barrels of premium Pinot Noir — driven by a desire to create something tangible, expressive and deeply connected to place.
That philosophy continues at di Lusso.
Alexander believes the role of a winemaker is not to control the wine, but to respect the grapes and the land that produces them. Years of working with exceptional Pinot Noir have taught him the importance of allowing wine to develop naturally. At di Lusso, the focus is on nurturing the vineyard and producing the highest quality fruit possible, so that the winemaking itself can remain minimal and intuitive.
Fermentation is a natural process that has been part of human history for thousands of years. Rather than manipulating the wine, Alexander’s role is simply to guide it — preserving the perfect balance of flavour and aroma before it reaches the bottle.
The result is wines that reflect the character of the Mudgee region and di Lusso’s Italian varietals. Expect natural, earthy expressions of the vineyard, with textured tannins and rich flavours. The whites show bright citrus and tropical aromas with depth and weight, while the reds offer darker notes of blackberry, plum and chocolate — wines designed to be enjoyed alongside food.
Food pairing is central to the di Lusso philosophy, just as it is in Italy. One current favourite is Lagrein, a deeply coloured wine with rich tannin and dark fruit flavours — perfect alongside a rare steak, chips and mushrooms.
Each vintage tells its own story. As a small estate, di Lusso allows the vineyard and the season to speak through the wine. Weather, soil and growing conditions shape the character of every vintage, meaning no two years are ever exactly the same.
This commitment to authenticity and place ensures that every bottle of di Lusso wine offers a true snapshot of the vineyard, the season and the land from which it came.
